Angoulême boasts a rich cultural heritage and history guaranteed to fascinate and enchant. Within its protective circle of ramparts, the medieval city of Angoulême is rich in history; boasting an 11th century Romanesque cathedral and a charming old town of narrow cobbled streets which now plays host to a range of galleries, restaurants, boutiques and markets. Looking down from the ramparts, the river Charente meanders through some of the most fertile land in France, the region being famous for its butter, oysters, goat cheese and…of course…its Cognac. Although strongly rooted in its heritage, Angoulême today is a dynamic town that, as well as being the cultural center for the region, is internationally famous as the Capital of the Comic Book with an annual festival and a series of cartoon-style murals around the town center. Angoulême was named UNESCO Creative City in 2019!
